Les Tweeternautes!

Today Ian Rankin (the Rebus novels) started the SoA Short Story Tweetathon in which tweeters collaborated to write a short story in 5 tweets.  The Tweetathon is organised by the Society Of Authors and will take place every Wednesday throughout September as part of their campaign to promote the short story in the face of cuts by the BBC. See yesterday’s blog for details. The event was wonderfully curated by Susie Maguire (@wrathofgod) and a great time was had by all les Tweeternautes and as Susie Maguire said:

What today’s Twittathon proves is that for every single line, there are 100s possible directions to go in. All would have been fascinating…

The below story is the result  –  for full details go to the Society of Authors site  http://www.societyofauthors.org/soa-short-story-tweetathon-soatale

“I woke up on the floor of a strange bedroom, clutching a single bullet in my right hand. I couldn’t see any sign of a gun. The whispered smell of death filled my lungs. Sweet, tired, familiar. But the body I stared at didn’t rest. It twitched. I watched, repulsed, as three cockroaches climb out of the open mouth of the pretty girl. The mobile in her trouser pocket rang. ‘You’re next.’ The voice on the line was unmistakeable. Heart lurching, I headed for the door. It swung open before I reached it. He grabbed me and pushed me onto the stage. From the sea of clapping people came the instruction. ‘Sing.’ I took a deep breath.”

Ian Rankin’s first line is:

“I woke up on the floor of a strange bedroom, clutching a single bullet in my right hand. I couldn’t see any sign of a gun. #soatale”

Congratulations to @JoannaCannon for her intriguing second line. Here it is:

“The whispered smell of death filled my lungs. Sweet, tired, familiar. But the body I stared at didn’t rest. It twitched. #soatale”

The third line is from @EffieMerryl, congratulations, and here it is:

“I watched, repulsed, as three cockroaches climb out of the open mouth of the pretty girl. The mobile in her trouser pocket rang.#soatale”

Well done @KatieThreeCats who came up with the fourth line in our five line story:

“You’re next.” The voice on the line was unmistakeable. Heart lurching, I headed for the door. It swung open before I reached it. #soatale”

And our concluding line goes to @MiriamDrori for:

He grabbed me and pushed me onto the stage. From the sea of clapping people came the instruction. “Sing.” I took a deep breath. #soatale

Next Wednesday the Society of Auhtors we will be continuing the short story tweetathon with a line from… find out next week!
