I had a delightful evening yesterday discussing The Blue Suitcase to the lovely German Speaking Congregation of Edinburgh. What I found most striking was how many people in the audience had similar stories to tell of being displaced – and not just people from Germany. Those olden days were all bad old days for so many people. Despite the serious nature of the discussion, however, it was a lovely evening, made all the more delightful because we had the fantastically talented Max Ledlie playing the clarsach – that’s a Scottish harp to you and me – and lovely tea and biscuits 🙂
So, a big thanks to Pastor Michael Mehl and the German Speaking Congregation for inviting me to come and speak, and to Reverend Ian Gilmour from St Andrew’s and St George’s West who helped make it all happen, and to everyone else who came along and shared their thoughts on what it’s like to have to leave your home – for whatever reason – and try and settle in new community.
