we are not alone

Over the weekend I went down south for the Authors North Spring Meeting*, held in Leeds. The hugely entertaining Simon Brett talked about his life as a writer of 86 novels!  This was followed by a great introduction to the world of Audio books by Julia Franklin – Julia is the narrator of 52 books on Audible (and as many others elsewhere).  It was a great day and the very lovely Clare  Dudman, author of four wonderful books,  has written all about it her blog The Keeper of Snails, so do go and have a read about the Authors North Spring Meeting 2012: Leeds

If you are a writer and have never been to a writing meeting or conference, do consider attending one or two. It’s not only a chance to leave your lonely garret and have a chat with like-minded people, it’s a great way of finding out what is actually happening in the world of writing. I know I  come away from such meetings feeling encouraged and more assured that my decision to become a writer was the right one. One of the main things I took away from Saturday’s meeting was something Simon Brett said about us writers writing about what we like. It sounds so obvious but there is such a lot of pressure to write about “worthy” or “lofty” things, we can sometimes lose sight of the obvious: if we don’t like what we write,  how can we expect the reader to?

*The Authors North Spring Meeting was organised by the Society of Authors. Do check them out. Their motto is “protecting the rights and furthering the interests of authors”. The great people there offer all kinds of helpful  services for the emerging and experienced writer.
